Then and now

A charter issued by Æthelred of Mercia around the year 700 mentions the Gillingas, a Saxon tribe from whom Ealing's name derives.2 The earliest surviving English census, for Ealing in January 1599, lists all 85 households in Ealing village with their inhabitants.2 The canonesses, who had founded a monastery in Paris in 1631, opened a school in 1634 for English pupils escaping the persecution of Catholics.10

The opening of the railway station in 1838 shifted Ealing's local economy to market garden supply, before its later suburban development.2 Ealing became a municipal borough in 1901.2 The priory moved to Ealing in 1910, to Castlebar Road, and in 1915 moved to its present site in Hillcrest Road.10
