Then and now

Houses dating from the Middle Ages stand on Weavering Street, which suggests the settlement has ancient origins.11 The name Weavering can be traced to the early 20th century, as it appears on Ordnance Survey maps of that time.11 In 1956, the 660-acre Vinters House estate, on which Grove Green lies, was sold to Percy Barden, a property developer.2

Between 1960 and 1961, two sections of what is now the M20 motorway were built between junctions 5 and 8, known as the Maidstone Bypass.12 In the late 1980s, the housing development company Abbey Homes built the Grove Green housing estate.11 In the late 1990s, a large area of open space left by the first phase of development was built upon, along what is now Grovewood Drive North.11
