Then and now
The castle does not reappear in contemporary historical records from the time of Ptolemy until around AD 600.1 The Welsh poem Y Gododdin refers to Din Eidyn, "the stronghold of Eidyn", which has generally been assumed to refer to the Castle Rock.1 There has been a royal castle on the rock since the reign of Malcolm III in the 11th century, and it continued as a royal residence until 1633.1
St Margaret's Chapel dates from the early 12th century and is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh.1 A building inside Edinburgh Castle was built in 1748 by William Skinner as a storehouse for ordnance.3 Opened on 23 May 1933 as the Scottish Naval and Military Museum, it was renamed the United Services Museum in 1949.3
