Then and now

The Brandenburg Gate was built from 1788 to 1791 by orders of King Frederick William II of Prussia, to designs by the royal architect Carl Gotthard Langhans.2 The gate was opened to traffic in August 1791, before its construction had been completed, and was originally called Friedenstor (Peace Gate).2 The square is named after Paris to commemorate the victory of the Sixth Coalition over the French Empire at the Battle of Paris (1814).1

After Napoleon's defeat in 1814 the quadriga was restored to Berlin and redesigned by Karl Friedrich Schinkel as a Prussian triumphal arch.2 In January 1919 and March 1920 government troops used the gate as a firing position during the Spartacist uprising and the Kapp Putsch, and renovation begun in 1913 was not completed until 1926.2
