Then and now
Shawmut Peninsula was first settled soon after the town of Boston was established by colonists in 1630.10 Before European settlement the street was a Native American path giving access to the shore, and in the 17th century it was called Orange Tree Lane.3 The merchant Anthony Chickly acquired part of the front portion of Bernard's lot in 1663 and constructed a new house there.10
When the Chickly House burned down in the Boston fire on November 27, 1676, Increase Mather moved to a house owned by Captain Thomas Bredon.10 In 1708 the street was renamed after the House of Hanover, heirs to the British throne under the Act of Settlement 1701.3 In the 1950s the block of Hanover Street between Cross Street and Blackstone Street was demolished to make way for the Central Artery.3
